The Fall Running Season Kicks Off on Governors Island

Here’s the least you need to know for NYCRUNS Squirrel Stampede 10K:

You Can Still Run The Race If You Aren’t Already Registered

Bibs are still available for the race this weekend, so if you want to run (or if you’re running and want to run with a friend or family member) sign up now before the race reaches capacity.

Download Our New NYCRUNS Events App!

It’s a big weekend in more ways than “run” as we introduce our new NYCRUNS Events App at this Saturday’s race. The free app will allow for real-time tracking of every runner at every race. This weekend, you, your friends, and family can easily follow your progress along the 10K course. Download the free app now at the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Take The Governors Island Ferry Departing At 7:00 AM

Please line up for the ferry at least 15 minutes prior to departure time. Ferries run every half hour. If you’re not on the 7:00 AM ferry, make sure you’re on the 7:30 AM ferry. Anything after that is pushing it. Please follow the staff’s instructions regarding boarding and queuing in line. The ferry is free for you and your friends and family.

The Governors Island Ferry is located at the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street. Mass transit is the best way to get there. On the subway, take either the 4/5 to Bowling Green, the R to Whitehall Street, the J to Broad Street, or the 1 to South Ferry. You can also take the M15 bus to South Street/Whitehall Street. Check mta.info for up-to-date mass transit details. There’s a Citi Bike station at South Street/Whitehall Street, as well.

Everything’s Centrally Located

Follow everyone off the ferry for the short walk to the Festival Area. This is where you’ll pick up your bib and shirt, check a bag, use the bathroom, hang out before the race, and refuel after your run. The Start and Finish are just steps away as well.

Pick Up Your Race Bib First

If you haven’t received your bib in the mail, you’ll pick it up at the Bib Pick-Up Tent in the Festival Area after you arrive on the island. Have your unique QR code ready. It’s located on your NYCRUNS Dashboard for this race. The QR code can be added to your Apple Wallet. A screen shot is fine too. For safety and security reasons and per NYCRUNS policy, only you can run with the bib that’s assigned to you.

Get Your Swag

Pick up your official race shirt in the Festival Area after getting your bib. Just show your QR code again (it has your requested size on it). You can pick up your shirt after the race too. To cut down on waste we try not to over order, so shirt sizes are not guaranteed.

Check A Bag

If you’ve got gear to check, head over to the Bag Check Area and drop your things off. For security reasons, all items must be in a clear bag. NYCRUNS can provide an 18” x 24” clear bag if you don’t have one. Sorry, but we can’t check non-clear bags such as backpacks, messenger bags, totes, purses, fanny packs, etc.

Please Be In Your Corral By 8:45 AM

The race starts at 9:00 AM. Please be in your designated start corral at least 15 minutes prior to the race. Corrals line up by letter, AA-F. Your Start Corral letter assignment will be noted on your bib and is determined by the pace designated in your NYCRUNS Dashboard profile.

The Course

The USATF-certified 10K course makes two loops of the island and features one-of-a-kind views of New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan. We’ll have multiple fluid stations along the loop with cups of water and Gatorade. Medical support will be available on the course. If you need medical assistance at any time, call the emergency number on the front of your bib.

Post-Race Refueling

We’ll have cups of water and Gatorade, a tasty apple, and Brooklyn’s best bagel (with a schmear, of course) to help you refuel after your run.

Don’t Do Governors Island Dirty

Please help keep Governors Island clean and sustainable. NYCRUNS partners with the island’s composter Earth Matter NY  to turn all cups and food from the race into compost. So, toss your trash, recycle your bottles, and place all race cups and food into the compost bins.

Check Your Results

You’ll receive an email after the race with your results. The full race results will be posted on our Results Page after the race as well. If you’re an overall or group award winner, you’ll receive an email 10-14 days after the race.

Nutten Better

Fun Fact – Governors Island was originally named Nutten Island by the Dutch in the 1600s due to all the nut trees on the island, so squirrels have been stampeding here for centuries.

We’re looking forward to helping you WIN YOUR RACE!
