Here’s the least you need to know for this weekend’s NYCRUNS Manhattan Ice Cream Social 5K & 10K Presented by Samsung Health on Governors Island. The 10K race is on Saturday, August 2 and the 5K race is on Sunday, August 3.
Take The Governors Island Ferry Departing At 7:00 AM (6:45 AM arrival)
Please line up for the ferry at least 15 minutes prior to departure time. Ferries run every half hour. If you’re not on the 7:00 AM ferry, make sure you’re on the 7:30 AM ferry. Anything after that is pushing it. Please follow the staff’s instructions regarding boarding and queuing in line. The ferry is free for you and your friends and family.
The Governors Island Ferry is located at the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street. Mass transit is the best way to get there. On the subway, take either the 4/5 to Bowling Green, the R to Whitehall Street, the J to Broad Street, or the 1 to South Ferry. You can also take the M15 bus to South Street/Whitehall Street. Check mta.info for up-to-date mass transit details. There’s a Citi Bike station at South Street/Whitehall Street, as well.
Everything’s Centrally Located
Follow everyone off the ferry for the short walk to the Festival Area. This is where you’ll pick up your bib and shirt, check a bag, use the bathroom, hang out before the race, and eat ice cream after the race. The Start and Finish are just steps away as well.
Pick Up Your Race Bib First
If you haven’t received your bib in the mail, you’ll pick it up at the Bib Pick-Up Tent in the Festival Area after you arrive on the island. Have your unique QR code ready. It’s located at the top of this email (it’s also on your NYCRUNS Dashboard for this race). The QR code can be added to your Apple Wallet. A screen shot is fine too. For safety and security reasons and per NYCRUNS policy, only you can run with the bib that’s assigned to you.
Get Your Swag
Pick up your official race shirt in the Festival Area after getting your bib. Just show your QR code again (it has your requested size on it). You can pick up your shirt after the race too. To cut down on waste we try not to over order, so shirt sizes are not guaranteed.
Check A Bag
If you’ve got gear to check, head over to the Bag Check Area and drop your things off. For security reasons, all items must be in a clear bag. NYCRUNS can provide an 18” x 24” clear bag if you don’t have one. Sorry, but we can’t check non-clear bags such as backpacks, messenger bags, totes, purses, fanny packs, etc.
Samsung Rest Club
Our friends at Samsung Health invite you to visit them at the Samsung Rest Club in the Festival Area – a run club that’s all about rest – where you can learn how tracking sleep data, including your Energy Score, can unlock your perfect run.
Please Be In Your Corral By 8:45 AM
The race starts at 9:00 AM. Please be in your designated start corral at least 15 minutes prior to the race. Corrals line up by letter, AA-F. Your Start Corral letter assignment will be noted on your bib and is determined by the pace designated in your NYCRUNS Dashboard profile.
The Course
We’ve made a few tweaks to our Governors Island course to improve your race experience. The USATF-certified 5K course makes one loop of the island while the USATF-certified 10K course makes two trips. The loop features one-of-a-kind views of New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan. We’ll have multiple fluid stations along the course with cups of water and Gatorade. Medical support will be available on the course as well. If you need medical assistance at any time, call the emergency number on the front of your bib.
The Finish
We’ll have cups of water and Gatorade, pretzels, apples…..and ICE CREAM (or non-dairy ice pops, your call) available in the Festival Area after you finish. If you’re in need of post-race assistance, our medical team will be positioned at the Finish to help.
Beat The Heat
Be mindful of the August sun (even if it’s cloudy). It’s warm. Please run smart. Stay hydrated leading up to the race and while running. If you’re running with a hydration pack or fuel belt, make sure you fill up before the race. A light hat or something covering your head is a good idea, if possible. Most importantly, listen to your body and slow down or stop if your body’s not feeling right.
Don’t Do Governors Island Dirty
Please help keep Governors Island clean and sustainable. NYCRUNS partners with the island’s composter Earth Matter NY to turn all cups and food from the race into compost. So, toss your trash, recycle your bottles, and place all race cups and food into the compost bins.
Check Your Results
You’ll receive an email after the race with your results. The full race results will be posted on our Results Page after the race as well. If you’re an overall or group award winner, you’ll receive an email 10-14 days after the race.
