NYCRUNS Spring Fling 5K & 10KClaim Race (Race Directors Only)
Mar 30, 2013Start time: 9:30
Usher in the spring or tune up for a big race in April on the flattest course in New York City — Roosevelt Island!
Roosevelt Island, conveniently sandwiched between Manhattan’s east side and Queens, has become an NYCRUNS favorite. It offers terrific views of the city and absolutely no crowds — perfect for racing.
Course Instructions: See below for the regular course maps. Due to damage from Hurricane Sandy, we are unable to use our regular course. We have accurately remeasured the course. A portion of the course is on a partial dirt road and could be muddy. Old shoes recommended!
The modified 5K course starts near the tram. It proceeds south and follows the normal 5K course until you reach the northern part of the island. At that point, you turn right on the partial dirt road or you run into a fence. Turn right when you reach the other side of the island and head to the finish as normal.
The modified 10k course starts just south of the Queensboro Bridge on the east side of the island. You will proceed west and then north, east, and south, completing a quick loop of the tram. You then proceed under the Queensboro bridge and follow the 5K course for your first loop.
To complete the 2nd loop, you will pass the finish line, head south past the Queensboro bridge and make a right on the road you started on. You will head north to the dirt road again and follow the same course to the finish. You do not loop past the tram again.
Transportation: The island can be accessed via the F train, the tram at 60th Street and 2nd Avenue, or by walking. If you drive, you’re on your own – we strongly discourage bringing a car to a small island with a race going on. And there’s very little parking, so you’re wise to park in Manhattan or Queens and take public transportation to the island.
Awards: The top three overall men and women will receive an award after the race. The first place finisher in each 5-year age group will be mailed an award upon demand.
Packet Pickup: Pickup will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the NYCRUNS office, and on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Running Company on the Upper East Side, on 3rd Avenue between 62nd and 63rd Streets. There will also be race-day pickup, but please try to get your bib at pre-race pickup to minimize crowding.
The NYCRUNS office is at 223 Jay Street, just a few minutes’ walk from the Jay Street/Metrotech station (F, A/C, R).
Cost: Online registration is now closed. You may register on site at the race. The standard no-refunds, no-deferrals, no-transfers policy applies, unless you are signed up for the NYCRUNS membership program.
