NYCRUNS New York City Ekiden
Dec 07, 2014Start time: 9:00 AM
102nd St. Transverse
We could tell you a lot about Japanese culture that we don’t really understand or we could tell you that the Ekiden is a really cool relay race created in Japan and that relays are mad fun. Go get your bestie or three of your besties and sign up for The New York City Ekiden today. This race is capped and will sell out quickly. Don’t have any besties? We have the Frozen Bonsai Half Marathon going on at the same time that you can do as well.
These races make up the final entries in the 2014 NYCRUNS InterClub Challenge as well (you do not have to be in a club to run)!
Learn more about the history of the Ekiden on Wikipedia if you like, but this Ekiden will be comprised of four legs. Only 2 and 4 person teams are allowed and you must alternate runners at each leg. What are the categories? Open (anything goes), Female and Co-Ed (Two Men & Two Women) in both the four-person and two-person relay. That’s a total of six winning teams! Co-Ed teams must have at least two women and one of them has to run leg 2 or 3 (the two longest legs).
Ekiden legs and course TBD
This race will be electronically timed, but there’s a twist. In a traditional Ekiden, the runners wear a sash that is passed from runner to runner. After you cross the timing mat, you must hand the sash to the next runner.
Race Cap & Time Limit: This race is currently capped at 150 relay teams. The official time limit is 3 hours but as a rule of thumb the last thing we unplug is the finish line mat – take your chances over 3:00.
Awards: Awards will be given to the winning relay teams in the Open, Female and Co-Ed categories.
Packet Pickup: TBD. There is no raceday packet pickup for the Ekiden.
Amenities: A great long sleeve race shirt will be included. Bag check and toilets will be provided. Hot chocolate, bagels, spreads, and fresh fruit will make up the usual great NYCRUNS post race spread.
Directions: Take the C train to 102nd St. or the 6 train to 103rd St. and enter the park. Race HQ is located at the center of the 102nd St. transverse near the finish line. Please check MTA Trip Planner for up to date and detailed mass transit directions and Google Maps for driving directions. Parking is limited at all of our events, we strongly encourage you to use mass transit.
Cost: A two person team is $80; and a four person team is $130. NYCRUNS members receive a 5% discount, race deferral rights and other perks.
The standard no-refunds, no-deferrals, no-transfers policy applies, unless you are signed up for the NYCRUNS membership program.
