THE RACE

Normally, we love Governors Island, but I have a bad feeling about this.

Governors Island was completely off limits to normal New Yorkers for 200 years and now it's a wonderful destination with the best views of lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn coastline, and the New York Harbor. What nobody tells you about though is the terrifying history of the place.  Military executions, accidents, tragedies, and more - buried safely in mass graves and abandoned cemeteries.  Let’s just say you’d best run a FAST 5K or 10K.

After you’ve scared yourself silly, stick around for Halloween treats, including candy! Costumes encouraged!

Your entry to the NYCRUNS Haunted Island 5K and 10K includes a ferry ride, your race-entry, a snazzy tech t-shirt, and post-race eats. Then make a day of it and stick around for island fun, including all sorts of Halloween goodness.

Feel like doing this one independently? You may also choose the virtual option.

Please be aware that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all aspects of this race are extremely subject to change.

COURSE

A whirlwind tour of Governors with amazing views! The 5K is one loop of the course; the 10K is two loops.

WAVE STARTS

We will start the race in multiple socially distant waves, beginning as early as  8 AM and ending at noon. Your wave will be pre-determined and may not be changed.  We cannot advise you of exact wave time until the week of the race. Please arrive no more than 30 minutes prior to your wave to avoid crowding on the race site.

Special Event Ferries run from the Battery Maritime Building in Manhattan on the morning of the race to get you to the island in time for your wave. These times are not publicly listed. We will assign you a ferry time that coincides with your wave. When it is time to depart Governors Island, you may take any of the public ferries available.

VIRTUAL OPTION

Virtual races have been around for a few years at least and come in all shapes and sizes. Largely though, they are designed so that you can do the race you want, when you want.

You can run or walk anywhere you want, including a treadmill.  You can track your miles any way you want and with any device you want. For this race, you must run your race and submit your result by December 31, 2021.

Once you've run, you'll submit your miles through  our new Run This One results system which is accessible to registered runners via their dashboard. You can automatically sync via MapMyRun and Garmin Connect, or you can add runs manually of course.

Most importantly, have fun.

GUESTS

Unfortunately due to COVID-19 only registered runners may attend the event and board the ferries runners will use. Guests will not be permitted. Information regarding public access to Governors Island is available here.

COVID-19

COVID-19 has changed many things about our events. The following procedures will be in effect for this event:

  • You may not attend the event if you have experienced symptoms of COVID-19 or tested positive in the fourteen (14) days prior to the event.
  • You must wear a face covering throughout this event other than when running. When running, you may remove the covering only when you can maintain social distance and the covering must remain around your head in some fashion so it can easily be reapplied.
  • No guests are allowed at the race site
  • Upon entry to the race site, a medical professional will take and record your temperature.
  • To avoid crowding, you must show up on time for your designated wave and leave immediately after completing your race.
  • Running in a group of two or more is not permitted.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19 within the fourteen days following the event, you must email theteam@nycruns.com so that we may notify staff and participants as necessary.

Prior to the race you will receive details on exact procedures for this event.

AMENITIES

Bag check will be provided. To reduce interaction with staff, we encourage you to avoid checking a bag. If you plan on checking a bag, you must use the single clear bag provided by NYCRUNS. Toilets will be provided and cleaned throughout the event.

While we encourage you to bring your own hydration, water will be available on the course for the 10K and at the finish. Due to COVID-19, we will forgo bagels, spreads and fresh fruit but water at the finish will be delivered in a goodie bag along with Gatorade, Dole Fruit Bowls in 100% Juice and other snacks.

The giveaway for this race will be a tech shirt*.  Free finish line photos and video will be available on your results page within a week of the race.
